Goldie has been in the Redlands emergency clinic since Friday night. When we took her in, her white blood count was one step above death. Backtracking a little bit, she did not eat on Tuesday, but did drink water, so on Wednesday she went in to the vet [and would still drink]. It took over an hour and a half to get a parvo test, which came back positive, but we also suspected a concurrent issue [and actually still do because she should be improving, but we’ll see], because she was not showing any symptoms other than not eating and lethargy which could be caused by not eating. It took another five hours to see the vet, and by then they only did a few minor things and sent her over to the local off-hours emergency. They created their own parvo protocol, and then began the problems. When we picked her up Thursday to take her to the vet for the day, they used a different treatment protocol, and when we took her to emergency on Thursday night, they went back to their protocol [but a lessened version – more palliative care – really?]. She did not receive consistent treatment or levels of IV fluids, so Friday she began to tank. Because we were deeply concerned, we made the decision to go to the Redlands 24 hour ER. Upon arrival, they immediately began a very aggressive treatment and were concerned about the crosspaths that were used to treat her so far.  She received a plasma infusion on Saturday and another on Sunday, and although she is a little better, she is not out of the woods yet. She is no longer vomiting, she tolerates the feeding tube without concerns, is still not interested in food, but her vitals have returned to normal.  We continue to pray and hope for a full recovery. However, this is not the end of the story. We have taken every precaution to prevent this, and she already had two vaccinations. Sadly, our suspicion is that someone that came to the adoption event we had in Toluca Lake on Sunday had contact with a dog with parvo. That is the only explanation we can come up with given all the other protection protocols we have used, however, we will never truly know the answer. All we know is we are fighting for her life.

Here's where it gets WORSE… None of her littermates showed any signs of parvo until Sunday when 3 showed signs in the late evening [lethargy, not interested in food…]. We were prepared with subcutaneous fluids and medication, so these three went into an isolation are ready with my rescue friends, and treatment started instantly with constant supervision – my friend never left their side and kept working the fluids and meds. All was OK until midnight when Annie tanked.  Working with her, she took a hard turn at 2:25 a.m., and died at 4:10 am. Her two siblings are at the Redlands ER now and fighting the disease, and it’s a rough battle.  Black Bart is a harder time, but plasma not necessary yet.  It’s now up to $18000 total for all three, Goldie being the hardest [$11000].  If you want to help, here it is…  A new Fundraiser:

We will spare no expense, we will spare no treatment and do everything we can to make sure that they get the best chance to have your own family and lives. We humbly ask for your prayers and positive energy to be sent their way that it may help them surmount this insidious and vile disease. It is a plague. We’ve tried everything to ensure their safety and protection from this, and any sorts of diseases and ailments, and we are still fighting to keep the rest of your siblings, safe and healthy, and the rest of the puppies at the rescue away from any potential contamination.  And if any of you want to help with medical expenses, please check the links on my profile page. For these two alone for the next 48 hours it’s about $7700. Goldie cost over $11,000, and this on my credit cards. That’s my decision. I’m here to help the dogs, and I will substitute teach forever, if needs be, to pay this off.  You are worth more to me than money. Life is worth more to me because it is beyond precious.  If you want to help, here it is [a new Fundraiser]: https://freeanimaldoctor.org/campaigns/mike-ryan/
