The King William Association has stated that they will not support renaming Beauregard Street. “The King William Association does not support a name change for Beauregard Street because the street was named after Augustine Felis Toutant Beauregard, a local landowner, not the Confederate General PGT Beauregard. The association does support the naming of a street or place of some importance for Emma Tenayuca.”
Augustine was the older brother of the general and owned enslaved Black people who built many buildings on his property. The slave quarters are still standing on Beauregard Ranch, you can view the pictures here. https://farmandranch.omeka.net/exhibits/show/beauregardranch/beauregardslave-quarters 3 of Augustine’s sons were Confederate soldiers, Alcee served under his uncle PGT Beauregard.
Public history is all about flexibility and because the support of the KWA is paramount to getting the street name changed I have decided to pivot and change course. I am changing the petition to ask the city council to support the creation and installation of a permanent monument to Emma Tenayuca.
The only official monument to her is a plaque located in Milam Square. As of now I am calling on local artists to submit proposals for a permanent monument to Emma Tenayuca and her commitment to the community. Please send submissions to emmatenayucaproject@gmail.com.
