Withdraw Your Sponsorship Of 2020 Olympic Games In Tokyo
The Issue
Samsung we ask you to cancel your sponsorship and support of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.
In Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, every year from 1st September through to March of the following year, the slaughter and abduction takes place of thousands of dolphins and small whales. The dolphin hunters are merciless and murder whole families in front of each other, picking out the ‘pretty’ ones who will be sold for up to $300,000 to aquariums around the world. These highly intelligent and emotionally aware beings will then begin a miserable life, being starved so they will perform tricks. This is having witnessed the slaughter of their entire families in front of them and having had to swim in their blood.
The hunters do not need the meat – dolphin meat is well known for being contaminated with dangerously high levels of mercury. The real prize for them is the high prices they will receive for those dolphins sold into captivity.
Some try to claim that it is a ‘tradition’ but the drive hunting only began in the 1970s with the introduction of motorboats. The captive dolphin industry is certainly not a tradition and without it the drive hunts would not be financially viable. A dolphin captured for the display industry is worth roughly 300 times as much as a dead dolphin for the meat industry.
Baby dolphins captured with their parents will either be murdered alongside them or will be dumped back in the ocean, having witnessed their entire families being massacred. They stand little to no chance of survival but the hunters don't want their tiny bodies to count against their quota. The meat of its family will be added to that already piled up in the Taiji meat plant's freezers; not wanted, not needed. These killers know no compassion, only greed.
The 2014 / 2015 quota for dead dolphins is as follows:
1,938 from 7 species:
114 short-finned Pilot Whales
450 Striped Dolphins
509 Bottlenose Dolphins
261 Risso's Dolphins
400 Pantropical Spotted Dolphins
70 False Killer Whales
134 Pacific White-Sided Dolphins
We do not feel that being associated with this, government supported, horrific abuse of sentient creatures portrays you in a good light, nor is Japan's actions in supporting this atrocity in the spirit of the Olympic Games.
We therefore urge you to withdraw your sponsorship of the 2020 Olympic Games In Tokyo and ask you to withdraw your support of the games by not providing wireless telecommunications and technology equipment.
