More transparency and direct actions from Samford University regarding racial injustice

The Issue

Yesterday, a former SGA President James Hornsby explained that “Samford University has become an institution that cares more about its branding, marketing, and public image than its students.” Based on our experiences at Samford and hearing other people’s experiences, we agree with everything James laid out in his post. Samford has become complacent when it comes to speaking out and acting against racial injustice, which is contrary to the Christian foundation that Samford was built on. The university as a whole must be staunch advocates for their students, especially when their Black students experience injustice and prejudice in their everyday lives. We want Samford to start being more transparent about their shortcomings and take more direct action to fix these shortcomings. It’s time to fight the various forms of racism, implicit bias, and discrimination that are apparent on campus. Samford’s silence and/or complacency is deafening, and we must do better. For the sake of the university we love so dear, we wanted to make this petition so everyone’s voices could be heard.
