Students at Samford are forced to pay thousands of dollars a year for a meal plan that simply does not hold up to its standards. The Samford Dining website promises “We are focused on the student experience and understand that dining is an integral part of your day to day life while at Samford. You can expect fresh food options, lots of variety and a steady calendar of events to keep things fun and exciting.” Students should not be promised “fresh” food when there are multiple sanitary and food quality hazards evident in the cafeteria daily. Students should not have to worry about finding bugs in their food or getting sick from the uncooked meat. In a recent inspection taken on November 26th, the Jefferson County Department of Health scored the Samford cafeteria a 73 out 100. In this inspection, remarks were made observing rodent droppings under the cold bar in the "My Kitchen" area, frozen condensate inside the box of cinnamon rolls and the hamburgers at "The Grill" tested below the recommended maintaining temperature for time and temperature-controlled foods. Along with these hazards, students have experienced uncooked meat, unclean silverware and dishes and observed finding bugs and hair in their food on multiple occasions. The food in the Samford cafeteria is provided by Sodexo a widely criticized company linked to food quality issues on various other college campuses such as a more recent incident that took place at The Citadel in South Carolina.

As a top-ranked university in the state of Alabama, Samford should address student’s concerns and implement changes immediately. We urge Samford to terminate their contract with Sodexo and partner with a food provider that better serves the campus. Students recognize that it is difficult for university dining services to cater and mass produce enough food to accommodate all students, but the food quality and sanitary concerns being presented should provoke Samford to take action. Our voices deserve to be heard. Students should not have to worry about consuming uncooked and unsanitary food. Sign this petition to get Samford to acknowledge the problem and voice your frustrations and concerns below.
