We the undersigned have read, with disappointment, the response of the board members of the Sameeksha Trust explaining the circumstances leading to the resignation of the editor of the Economic and Political Weekly, the respected journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta. While the board is well within its rights to issue certain directions for the better administrative governance of the journal, its actions appear misplaced in view of the grave challenge posed to the independence of EPW and to media at large, especially in the context of a powerful and politically entrenched corporate group issuing a legal notice to the journal.

Mr Guha Thakurta has already apologised for not seeking the prior approval of the board before engaging legal counsel in response to the notice issued by the Adani Group. With regard to instructions by the board to Mr Guha Thakurta about other aspects of his functioning, the board has clearly breached the editorial prerogative leaving Mr Guha Thakurta with little choice but to resign.

While the board and the Trust are entitled to seek editorial leadership of their choosing, the decision on the day-to-day running of the journal must reside with the editor once he or she is appointed. In the face of increasing threats to independent media in India and the region, the occasion called for the board to set aside its managerial differences with the editor and come to the defence of EPW’s journalistic independence, the challenge to which constituted the much graver provocation.

We the readers and supporters of the EPW call on the journal’s trustees, who are respected academics and civil society leaders, to take steps to enable Mr Guha Thakurta to resume his duties as an independent editor immediately, to upload the articles which were taken down from the journal’s website, and to take a strong and clear stand against the attempts to muzzle independent media.
