Same Car. Same Emissions. Why Ban Only NCR Number Plates?
Same Car. Same Emissions. Why Ban Only NCR Number Plates?
The Issue
TITLE: Same Car. Same Emissions. Why Ban Only NCR Number Plates?
From 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, a Delhi Government notification dated 23.06.2026 bars every car registered outside Delhi that is below BS-VI, every day, whatever the air quality, and it will return every winter. According to transport department estimates, more than 10 lakh vehicles across Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad do not meet BS-VI standards. socialnews
Take two identical BS-IV petrol cars, both with valid PUC certificates. The one with a Delhi plate drives freely; the one with a Noida or Gurugram plate is barred. Exhaust doesn’t check number plates.
Even CAQM, the NCR’s own air-quality authority, does not restrict BS-IV petrol cars at any GRAP stage, not even “Severe+”. Its rules apply equally across Delhi and the NCR.
Lakhs of us cross into Delhi daily for work, courts, hospitals and family. The ban offers no exemption process for people with no alternative.
We want clean air. We also want fair rules.
We demand:
Treat cars of the same emission standard alike, whatever their registration.
Publish the scientific evidence behind the ban.
Enforce PUC norms strictly and act against polluting vehicles, not number plates.
Create exemptions for patients, caregivers and workers with genuine needs.
Sign and share with everyone who drives into Delhi.
