Los firmantes somos médicos preocupados por el progresivo deterioro de la salud y potencial muerte de 25 cubanos, promotores de derechos humanos, que se encuentran en huelga de hambre desde el 20 de marzo. Nos dirigimos a su organización urgiendo la atención e intervención inmediata que ameritan estos casos.

El régimen cubano no sólo ha aumentado la represión contra los miembros de la Unión Patriótica de Cuba (UNPACU), organización disidente pacífica, sino que también ha creado un cerco en las inmediaciones de su sede para impedir el acceso a la misma. En la sede de la UNPACU se brinda ayuda humanitaria a un número significativo de ciudadanos en situación de pobreza extrema en Santiago de Cuba. Se le da comida al hambriento, así como servicios médicos, incluyendo medicinas, al enfermo.

Los huelguistas, hombres y mujeres, incluyendo a un prisionero de conciencia, consideraron que la huelga de hambre era la única opción que les quedaba para demandar el fin del cerco policial a la sede de UNPACU que impide el acceso a aquellos que vienen en busca de ayuda. A los activistas se les impide llevar a cabo la labor humanitaria y les son negados derechos básicos, como la libertad de movimiento. La represión a la que son sometidos ha incluido golpes y apedreamientos, que no discriminan a personas tan inocentes como niños y ancianos. 

En la Isla, desde enero de 1959 al presente, existen al menos 13 casos documentados de ciudadanos cubanos que han fallecido en huelga de hambre reclamando derechos fundamentales. 

El pueblo cubano está atravesando uno de los períodos más difíciles de las últimas décadas. Le instamos a pronunciarse en favor del fin de la represión contra los huelguistas. De acuerdo a los ideales y preceptos que rigen su institución, deberes insoslayables para los que fue creada, le solicitamos que actúe para procurar la asistencia a las personas cuyas vidas están en riesgo.

Es un imperativo ético que su organización se manifieste a favor de la vida.

The signatories, doctors concerned about the progressive deterioration of the health and potential death of 26 Cubans, promoters of human rights on the island, who have been on hunger strike since March 20. We address your organizations urging the immediate attention and intervention that these cases deserve.

The Cuban regime has not only increased repression against members of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), a peaceful dissident organization, but also have surrounded the vicinity of its headquarters to prevent access to the facility. UNPACU headquarters provides humanitarian aid to a significant number of citizens in extreme poverty throughout Santiago de Cuba. Food is given to the hungry, as well as medical services, including medicine to the sick.

The strikers -- men and women, including a prisoner of conscience -- considered the hunger strike to be the only option available to demand the end of the police harassment against the UNPACU headquarters that prevents access to those who come in search of help. Activists are prevented from carrying out humanitarian work and denied basic rights, such as freedom of movement. The repression they face includes beatings and stoning; these practices do not discriminate against innocent people such as children and the elderly.

On the island, from January 1959 to the present, there have been at least 13 documented cases of Cuban citizens who have died on hunger strike claiming their most fundamental rights. 

The Cuban people are going through one of the most difficult periods in recent decades.

We urge you to speak out in favor of ending the repression against the strikers. Do not be silent in the face of this reality. Act according to the ideals and precepts that should govern your institutions and within the unavoidable duties for which they were created. We implore you to act, and to seek assistance for the people whose lives are at risk.

It is an ethical imperative to speak out in favor of life.
