Salvemos El criadero de iguanas marinas en Galápagos 'El Mirador''

El Mirador en la playa de Puerto Villamil, isla Isabela Galápagos, es un lugar vital para la reproducción exitosa de iguanas marinas, las únicas iguanas en el mundo que se alimentan en el mar.

Este sitio ha sido estudiado por científicos durante años y todos coinciden en que es vital mantenerlo para garantizar que estos reptiles mantengan su población saludable.

A pesar de lo importante que es el área alrededor del mirador, el Municipio de Isabela inició la semana pasada la construcción de una nueva estructura hormigón sobre las rocas que brindan refugio a las iguanas bebés, las pequeñas, las iguanas recién nacidas que no logran aún enfrentar el mar hasta que cumplen 2 años.

Esta obra es financiada por el Consejo de Gobierno de Galápagos, una institución que no puede financiar obras nuevas y la presentó como un mantenimiento de lo existente. Si se considera que se cambiaron los materiales (de madera a hormigón) y se incrementó el área a intervenir y se construirán dos pérgolas, eso califica como una obra nueva y por lo tanto debe presentar los estudios de impacto ambiental y los permisos respectivos, los cuales no tienen. Mas aún si se considera que se construye junto al área de anidación de las iguanas marinas donde ellas cavan sus nidos en la arena, tierra y las rocas sueltas de lava que está junto a la obra nueva.

Pero la lista de las irregularidades no termina con la falta de autorizaciones, el proyecto no fue socializado con la población y se empieza a construir en plena temporada de incubación de las iguanas, ya que los huevos ya se colocaron durante el mes de febrero pasado. Es decir, bajo la arena que es pisoteada a hay decenas de nidos con cientos de huevos de iguanas.

Además, se pretende construir un camino a un costado el lugar de anidación que está protegido desde 2012 donde las iguanas anida, ponen sus nidos y que está junto al Mirador.

Ante estos atropellos a una de las especies endémicas (catalogadas como vulnerables por la UICN) y que es un emblema de las islas, les pedimos que se una a esta petición para que el presidente del Ecuador: (Guillermo Lasso ) ordene la intervención del Ministerio del Ambiente y el Parque Nacional Galápagos para que se realice primero una evaluación del impacto ambiental de la construcción sobre las iguanas marinas y su área de anidación. Una vez con los resultados, se tome una decisión adecuada y en favor de la vida.

El Mirador" on Cuna del Sol beach in Puerto Villamil, Isabela island, Galapagos , is a vital place for the succ⅞essful reproduction of Isabela island's Marine Iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus albemarlensis), the only iguanas in the world that feed at sea until they are two years old.

This site has been studied by scientists for years and all agree that it is vital to conserve it in order to ensure that these reptiles keep their population healthy.

Despite the importance of the nesting area around the viewpoint, last week the Municipality of Isabela began raising a new concrete structure on the same rocks that at night provide shelter from roaming cats for the hatchlings, small defenseless juvenile iguanas that cannot face the sea until they are two years old.

This project is being financed by the Galapagos Government Council, an institution that cannot legally finance new constructions thus presented it as maintenance work on the existing lookout tower. Considering that the materials were changed (from wood to concrete) and the area to be intervened was increased in addition two new pergolas will be built, qualifies it as a new construction therefore the mandatory environmental impact studies and respective permits, which they do not have , must be presented before any construction begins. Even more so if one considers that it is located next to the fragile area where Marine Iguanas have historically chosen as the ideal location to dig their nests, preferring the sandy earth mixed with loose lava rock ash and grasses to stabilize the ground is located directly next to the newly proposed constructions.

The list of irregularities does not end with the lack of authorizations, the project was never socialized with the town residents before construction began in the middle of the iguana incubation season, since the eggs were laid during February. That is, under the ground that is being trampled there are dozens of nests with hundreds of iguana eggs.

In addition, they intend to build a walkway right next to the nesting site that has been protected since 2012 where iguanas dig burrows and lay their eggs is next to the Mirador.

Given these violations of Nature's Rights and against an endemic species (listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN) which is also a keystone species of the Galapagos islands, we ask you to join this petition so that the President of ECUADOR: (Guillermo Lasso) orders the intervention of the Ministry of the Environment and the Galapagos National Park to first carry out the legally obligated Environmental Impact Study of the proposed construction's possible negative affects upon the Marine Iguanas and their nesting site. With results in hand and careful contemplation appropriate decisions can be made respecting both Human Rights and, Rights of Nature while protecting the biodiversity.
