🦁 Save the Lions of the Maasai Mara! A Global Call for African Wildlife
To: UN, UNESCO, Government of Kenya, Kenya Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, and International Conservation Organizations.
The Maasai Mara, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, is one of the most precious and iconic ecosystems on the planet. Its plains are home to unparalleled biodiversity and are the beating heart of African wildlife.
However, today the Maasai Mara faces an unprecedented crisis. Corruption, greed, and impunity are destroying what nature took millions of years to build. This is an urgent call for life, justice, and the preservation of a heritage that belongs to all humanity.
The Crisis
In recent years, increasingly serious allegations point to a system of widespread corruption within the Narok County administration, responsible for managing the reserve. Reports indicate that rangers and local authorities (including Governor Patrick Ntoto) have been bribed, including by foreign groups, to favor certain interests, selectively protecting some lions while expelling, poisoning, or killing others.
Furthermore:
• Illegal grazing within protected areas causes fatal clashes between livestock and predators.
• Luxury buildings, farms, and bomas encroach on conservation zones, blocking migratory routes and compromising the ecosystem.
• Lion trafficking and poaching are suspected, with daily disappearances and mysterious deaths. Hunting was banned in 1977 when the reserve was created.
The natural balance of the Maasai Mara is collapsing before our eyes, and the silence of the authorities and the government is deafening.
The Case of the Black Rock Boys
Symbols of strength and majesty, the Black Rock Boys, one of the most admired and beloved lion coalitions in the world, have been decimated.
Today, only Oloimina remains, the last survivor. His brothers were brutally killed:
• Oloisiadu – disappeared in 2021, at age 4;
• Olobor – murdered on January 25, 2024, at age 6 and a half; his bones were never found.
• Lorkulup – killed on January 25, 2025, exactly one year after Olobor; at age 7 and a half, his body was dismembered. •Oloshipa – murdered on September 25, 2025; at just 8 years old, his head and bones were never found. It is suspected that he was sold to hunters, just 8 months after Lorkulup's death.
With three of them brutally murdered in less than two years.
This coalition left 15 cubs who now live under grave threat. And this tragedy is not an isolated case; lions continue to disappear mysteriously, and new coalitions, like the Top Boys, are always under threat of suffering the same fate.
All of these actions constitute a serious environmental crime and must be punished.
What We Demand
We, citizens and wildlife defenders around the world, demand immediate action from the competent authorities and the international community.
We call for:1. Independent and transparent investigations into the corruption in the Narok government and the killing of lions in the Maasai Mara;
2. Urgent international oversight by UNESCO, the UN, and global environmental organizations;
3. Effective and permanent protection of conservation areas and the Great Migration routes;
4. Strict punishment for all those involved in illegal practices, including trafficking, poisoning, and hunting of lions;
5. Prohibition and immediate removal of illegal farms, bomas, and luxury buildings within protected areas;
6. Creation of an international monitoring committee, with independent representatives, to ensure transparency and accountability.
The Maasai Mara does not belong to politicians or businesspeople—it belongs to nature, Africa, and humanity. Protecting the Maasai Mara means protecting the future of African wildlife, ensuring that future generations can still see lions, elephants, and wildebeest living freely, as nature always intended.
Every signature is a voice against cruelty, corruption, and destruction.
Silence is complicity.
Join us in this urgent call for justice and life.
The Maasai Mara is crying out for help, and the world must respond.
