The majority of students in public schools in Utah right now are finding it very difficult to put in 100% effort for their online school work. This pandemic has thrown a wrench into the way that we’ve become conditioned to be able to learn which has made it so that our online classes are now dropping our grades and GPAs. If we switched to a pass/fail system where any grade above 50% is an A and any grade below 50% is an F. This would make it so that the students who feel like they can’t find the motivation or can’t focus like this feel like they’re able to succeed even through all that’s going on. Not only that, but those students who are already getting good grades and can work well in this type of learning will not take any blows and it will even help them to do better. Most of the students that are currently in public school have been in public schools their whole lives and when they had to switch to online school it completely changed what they had become used to when it came to learning. The majority of students now can only learn in a structured school environment because it makes it much easier to focus and find motivation to do schoolwork for each class so, now with us doing everything on our own and on our own time our grades have plummeted because we just can’t learn like this. Switching to pass/fail would eliminate those problems and make it much much easier on both teachers and students.
