My husband started attending flight school at Chesapeake Proflight in December of 2006. When he began school they required that he pay as he went. This required us to take out a large loan and keep some of the loan amount on file with Chesapeake ProFlight. They referred us to Sallie Mae where we took out a loan for $42,850. The school had promised us in the beginning that once he got to a particular point in his training that he would be hired on as a trainer while he completed the rest of his training to become a pilot. He started school full time but soon after had to go to part time because we had our first child. Our son was born with a heart condition and spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital requiring a lot of our time. He attended school until November 2008 when he received papers in the mail from a lawyer from the school. They had lost their funding and as a result were closing their doors. This left us with a large loan, most of which we hadn't used. We contacted Sallie Mae once we found out about the closing of the school and asked them what we should do with the remainder of the loan money. They told us there was nothing that they could do for us. Switching schools was not an option because it required taking out another large loan to cover the cost of attending a more expensive school. The only way we could afford the loan was to use the loan money to pay the $500 a month until that money ran out. Five years later we have paid over $30,000 and we still owe over $32,000. We have nothing to show for it.
We are asking that Sallie Mae please forgive our loan.
