Discontinue the use of racially offensive language at school fundraisers
The Issue
Come April, our school will be holding a fundraising event featuring a raffle called a "Chinese Auction". The term "Chinese Auction" was originally coined in the late 19th century and comes from a time when prejudice and racism against Chinese immigrants was prevalent. These auctions have no history as coming from China, in fact was started in the US and was called “Chinese” as a way to connote mysticism or "tricky" behaviour.
Many organizations and Churches have already eliminated this term and have changed the name of the auction to something less culturally offensive. I am simply asking the school to change the name of the auction; no more, no less.
My family and I believe that to be a productive part of a community requires not only kindness to others but also sensitivity to others. Our school community is refusing to be culturally sensitive and by doing so are teaching our children that racially insensitive language and offensive terms are acceptable.
