STOP FOOD WASTE - PURCHASE UNSOLD SUPERMARKET FOOD CHEAP AND SAVE MONEY

STOP FOOD WASTE - PURCHASE UNSOLD SUPERMARKET FOOD CHEAP AND SAVE MONEY
The Issue
Lots of food goes to waste - unsold food are thrown away and rots especially perishables such as fruit and vegetables and fish and meat - some of this food is given away to charities for the homeless and soup kitchens and shelters. Food is donated to food banks and charity close to the sell by or best before date and often there are not enough people to eat the food before it rots according to one of the first food banks set up - amount of unsold food could be better managed to reduce waste - food which isn't sold should be identified early and sold at discount prices before it goes to waste - helping those who don't need to go to charity shelters however live near the breadline or suffer from poverty.
If you go to the supermarket often at the end of the day or the end of the week there are unsold sandwiches and pizzas and unsold fruit and vegetables and fish and meat being sold at cut prices often at half and quarter price - if you are a student or unemployed or on low income or minimum wage or on the breadline you can go to the supermarket at this time and get really cheap food - you wouldn't have to go to the pound shop. We all have problems making ends meet and food takes a lot out of the monthly salary. Purchasing cheaper food which are near the end date or sell by date would be very handy. At the moment its just sandwiches, freezer compartment aisle items and some fruits and vegetables - supermarkets should offer all unsold food at cheaper prices.
I would like to campaign for all supermarkets to have a sales and offer section in store or online where all unsold food near or after sell by or end date or best before end date should be identified early and sold at low prices for customers to purchase - this would work for the supermarkets and work for us and the environment.
Tesco are already removing best before dates from some fruits and vegetables to help reduce food waste. "The move is being made to help prevent perfectly edible food from being thrown away."
This is what Tesco says on its website:
‘Best Before’ labels are put on foods by retailers as a quality indication to show that although they are no longer at their best they are still good to eat.
Tesco to remove ‘best before’ dates off selected fruit and vegetable lines to help cut down on food waste
Tesco Head of Food Waste Mark Little explains:
“We know some customers may be confused by the difference between ‘Best Before’ and ‘Use By’ dates on food and this can lead to perfectly edible items being thrown away before they need to be discarded.
The Food Standards Agency states that “the best before date, sometimes shown as BBE, is about quality and not safety. The food will be safe to eat after this date but may not be at its best.”
Sainsburys also has a campaign to reduce food waste and is reviewing use by and best before dates as well.
ASDA states on its website that it believes that protecting the environment and saving people money goes hand in hand.
This is the perfect time to campaign for all supermarkets to provide customers with cheap unsold food at low price before it goes to waste.
