Ethical and sustainable sourcing of fruit and vegetables by UK supermarkets

The Issue

Having watched the BBC 2 series on the Mediterranean it is clear that UK supermarkets are purchasing cheap fruit and vegetables without checking that the suppliers operate a sustainable business with minimal impact on the environment. Many workers picking fruit live in poor conditions and the owners dispose of the plastic that they use to build their green houses irresponsibly causing environmental pollution. Supermarkets must take more responsibility for the products they source and the workers employed in their supply chain. Plastic free aisles would be a good place to start.
