In nearly all American egg farms, mother hens spend their entire lives cramped in cruel, filthy, and unsustainable battery cages. California has taken a historic stand against battery cages by passing two groundbreaking animal protection laws, Prop 2 and AB1437, that together require all shell eggs sold in the state are produced by farm animals that have adequate space for natural behaviors.

Both are set to become in effect January 1st, 2015, and stand to spare countless hens from a lifetime of unimaginable misery. Unforunately, some egg producers are now trying to skirt this animal cruelty law by trying to continue to sell caged eggs to California retailers even after this comes into effect through a loophole in the law that allows for slightly modified cages. We are calling on California’s retailers to act on the good intentions of its citizens: only purchase eggs from cage-free farms.

Safeway, a large supermarket chain that is headquarted in California, is now presented with the opportunity to stand with the voters of California and pledge to be 100% cage-free. If they continue to sell eggs from battery cage farms after AB 1437 comes into effect, Safeway will be turning its back on the efforts of California’s voters and contributing to inhumane animal agriculture practices.

Please, sign my petition and ask Safeway to take a stand with AB1437 against animal cruelty and pledge to be 100% cage-free. It's time for Safeway to do the right thing and listen to the voters of California by ending their support of farms that still use outdated battery cage systems.
