Safety on Public Transportation

The Issue

On more than one occasion, I have gotten on a bus and have had legitimate fears for my safety due to the number of people on the bus under the influence of illicit substances. There have been numerous times where I have witnessed people openly using drugs or preparing drugs for consumption. These people are getting on the bus with drugs and glass pipes in their hands and the drivers are allowing them on the bus, putting every other rider's safety in jeopardy.

On my most recent LTC trip, three men got on the bus, none of them could barely even walk straight due to the influence of drugs. The driver allowed these men to get on the bus. Also on this bus were many other drug addicts, most of which passed out taking up more than one seat. This needs to be stopped. We should not have to fear for our safety when riding a city bus. There have been times that I have been approached out of nowhere, and verbally assaulted by someone under the influence.

The issues are also present at bus stops around the city. I often fear for my safety while at the bus stop because of the open air drug use occurring. Police cars are driving by and doing nothing about the obvious laws being broken. If that officer is on a call, then they should be radioing to have another unit respond. An April 8th press release detailed the plan for dealing with open air drugs use in the city. Clearly this is not being done.

I had a great conversation about this with London Transit. They know that these issues are happening, but unfortunately their hands are tied with what they can do. I was informed that calls placed to the London Police Service for London Transit busses are low priority.

I am calling for immediate action to be taken

  1. Calls placed to the London Police Service need to prioritized based on what is occurring at the time
  2. Security guards need to be put on the busses that run through the downtown core
  3. Panic alarms need to be installed on the buses so that passengers can quickly alert the driver to dangerous situations

The public should be able to ride city transportation without fearing for safety
