Safety First: Mandatory Enhanced DBS Checks For All UK Charity Workers!
The Issue
Hello, thank you for visiting my petition!
Firstly, let's start with my story:
In 2022, I was beaten black & blue by Jordan Johnson; a previously convicted criminal who is now working as a Therapeutic Caseworker within a UK charity called Spark2Life — a London based organisation that supports children and vulnerable adults affected by poverty, knife crime, and abuse.
Jordan has served time in prison due to gang ties and has since lied about his past to gain employment in a trusted position. He has told Spark2Life that he turned his life around at 19 — but in reality; he was 27 when he viciously attacked me on 17/03/22, after I denied him sexual intercourse.
Jordan punched & kicked me; smashed my head against the wall and sofa edges; and assaulted me with a metal chair, throwing it directly at my head and knocking me to the ground. As I was running away in fear for my life; Jordan ran back into his house, changed into an all black outfit and balaclava; and proceeded to follow me on his bicycle , come up behind me and punch me in the back of my head, knocking me to the ground again.
This was immediately reported in Tottenham police station; however, unfortunately, their officers are incompetent and despite me providing his name, face, age, address and after having seen the extent of my injuries; they failed to arrest him. The police also proceeded to lose my evidence 3 times! A new investigation has been opened; hopefully the police will actually do their job this time around!
As Jordan has managed to secure a frontline therapeutic role working directly with abused children & vulnerable adults; this raises a serious and urgent concern: How many UK charities are hiring staff without properly vetting their criminal history or verifying their claims?
Charities often work directly with those who are most vulnerable — survivors of abuse, children, people facing trauma, and individuals seeking safety. Allowing someone with a violent past, or anyone who lies about that past, to hold a position of power or trust puts lives at risk.
That’s why I am calling on the UK Government to introduce a law requiring all registered charities to conduct full, enhanced background checks (DBS checks) on every staff member and volunteer, especially those in frontline or therapeutic roles.
This law should ensure:
✅ Mandatory enhanced DBS checks before employment begins.
✅ Re-verification every 2–3 years to ensure ongoing compliance.
✅ Legal accountability for organisations that fail to properly screen staff.
✅ Transparency and safeguarding standards across all UK charities.
Everyone deserves to feel safe in the care of charities meant to protect and uplift them. No one should ever have to go through what I did. Together, we can make sure of that.
