The Issue

This plea comes from a concerned community that cherishes its families with children diagnosed with autism. In our city of Bakersfield, there are many mothers who feel confined because they cannot take their children to the park as there is a constant fear that their child could elope at any moment.

This lack of secure recreational space not only limits these children's rights to play but also adversely affects their physical and mental health, as outdoor play is crucial in promoting healthy development and well-being in children. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children should have at least 60 minutes of physical activity everyday.

Constructing a fence around the Bakersfield park may seem like a minor structural change, but it can majorly improve the quality of life for these families. Enhanced safety measures such as this have proven effective in other communities. The Autism Society has advocated for such modifications to public spaces, stating that they can significantly reduce stress for individuals with autism and their families.

Thus, we urge the city of Bakersfield to promptly implement this necessary measure. We believe in a community where all children can play freely and safely. We need your help to make this a reality. Please sign this petition and stand with the families of Bakersfield city.
