REGARDING THE INCLUSION OF A DISC GOLF COURSE IN HIGHLAND PARK
We respect the disc golfers’ passion for their sport and welcome them to the neighborhood, but we believe that the current course location poses a public safety risk and conflicts with the interests of regular park users. For these reasons, we feel the course should be moved to a safer area away from picnickers, cyclists, and pedestrians, similar to the designated areas for baseball, tennis, and soccer.
We have received multiple reports of discs hitting people, knocking a cyclist off their bike, near-misses with children, dogs, and elderly visitors, and other concerning incidents. Most disc golfers come from other neighborhoods, expecting a designated course, which the current setup resembles. As a result, they may see anyone in their path as an obstacle or nuisance to their game. In contrast, other park-goers expect a typical public park experience, not a disc golf course, and may be taken aback or frustrated when asked to move from a family picnic or endangered by flying discs. This conflict of interests has already led to frustration, anger, and confrontations between park users and disc golfers.
We want disc golfers to enjoy their sport peacefully without confrontation, while the general public can relax and spend time with family, friends, and pets in a safe and undisturbed environment. Relocating the disc golf course to a dedicated, protected area would ensure everyone can enjoy the park or golf game harmoniously, fostering a more peaceful and enjoyable experience for all.
