Reduce the speed limit on the A346 outside Ogbourne St George to make it safer for all

Please help make the Ogbourne St George and Hallam junctions on the A346 safer for drivers, local residents, walkers, cyclists and riders by signing our petition.

We, the undersigned, call on Wiltshire Council and Highways England to improve safety on this stretch of the A346 by:

  • Reducing the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph;
  • Installing flashing speed limit signs;
  • Installing more prominent signs for motorists to take note of the Hallam and Ogbourne St George turnings;
  • Installing signs to alert motorists that walkers, cyclists and riders are crossing the Ridgeway at this point of the road;
  • Reviewing the physical features of the road with a view to engineering any changes that will encourage drivers to slow down.

The residents of the small hamlet of Hallam, just south of Ogbourne St George, have to battle a sharp turn onto the busy A346.  It’s a dangerous turning at the best of times, made all the more treacherous by the speed by which the cars come down the A346. Similar difficulties are faced by drivers leaving Ogbourne St George, particularly when turning towards Marlborough.

In addition the Ridgeway National Trail crosses the A346 at this point, and is extensively used by walkers, cyclists and riders.

The lack of visible warning signs alerting motorists that cars are turning and Ridgeway ramblers are crossing further exacerbates the dangers.

All the residents of Hallam have had a number of near misses at this junction, and serious accidents have occurred.  It is only a matter of time before a serious or fatal accident takes place at either of these junctions.  Ensuring the safety of motorists and ramblers should be a top priority for Wiltshire Council.

For some unknown reason the 50 mph speed restrictions are lifted just south of the Hallam turn. It seems entirely reasonable to extend the 50mph restrictions to cover the hamlet of Hallam and the village of Ogbourne St George.

The Parish Council of Ogbourne St George is fully supportive of this petition. Should Wiltshire Council refuse this entirely reasonable request they will bear a very heavy responsibility should a serious or fatal accident occur.

We would hope that all resident drivers in both Hallam and Ogbourne St George recognise the dangers of these junctions and support this petition.  Only with a significant support, will our request result in this necessary change.

Please support us by signing this petition.  Thank you!
