Safer Speed Limit on La Jolla Boulevard

Safer Speed Limit on La Jolla Boulevard
The Issue
Lower speed limits save lives and prevent injuries.
The speed limit on La Jolla Boulevard between Pacific Beach and Bird Rock is too high at 35 mph!
It is a route to Bird Rock Elementary School and the well-trafficked but dangerous crossing at the world-famous Tourmaline Surf Park destination, in addition to the Bird Rock business district.
35mph is a higher speed than all the other commercial/residential streets that connect with La Jolla Boulevard, so drivers are encouraged to dangerously SPEED UP.
This stretch of La Jolla Boulevard between Loring Street/Mission Bay Boulevard and Colima Street is often used by speeding drivers to avoid I-5 and get to beaches further north or speeding down from Turquoise.
- Mission Boulevard is 30mph.
- Turquoise Street is 25mph
- Loring Street is 25 and 20mph.
- And the speed limit at the La Jolla Boulevard/Colima Street roundabout is 15mph! With no transition from 35mph.
I support lowering the speed limit on La Jolla Boulevard!
The speed limit on this stretch of La Jolla Boulevard was never lowered after the design changes some years ago. It is erroneously classified. Please correct that anomaly, use AB43, the Comprehensive Speed Management Plan process or any other tool to make the speed safer.
Thank you.
"Crossing La Jolla Boulevard to get to the surf or take my kids to school shouldn't feel like a life-or-death gamble. We shouldn't need luck to cross our own street."
- A concerned Bird Rock parent and surfer
"Every morning, holding my child's hand and waiting for a break in the 35 mph traffic, my heart pounds. Drivers race down this street to beat the I-5 traffic, treating our community like a speedway. Getting my son to school or walking to Tourmaline with my surfboard shouldn't be the most dangerous part of our day."
- Sarah K., Pacific Beach Resident
"Tourmaline is a world-class destination for joy and recreation, but the journey there is fraught with fear. I've seen families with coolers and boards stranded on the median, waiting for a moment of bravery to dash across La Jolla Blvd. It’s a heartbreaking contradiction that the path to such a beautiful place is so rife with danger."
- Mark T., Local Surfer
"We cross La Jolla Boulevard with our surfboards in one hand and our children's hands in the other, hoping the speeding drivers see us. It's a risk we shouldn't have to take."
- A Local Resident
"The walk to Bird Rock Elementary should be safe and peaceful. Instead, we have to teach our kids to sprint across La Jolla Boulevard between speeding cars. Our children's safety should be the top priority."
- A Bird Rock Elementary Parent
