Safer Schools for Every Child in BC

The Issue

Recent safety incidents in British Columbia schools have reminded families across the province that proactive safety measures are essential. Consistency across schools matters.

We are calling on the Boards of Education and the government of British Columbia to implement consistent, province-wide safety measures in all schools by:

Keeping exterior doors locked during instructional hours
Installing secure video intercom systems at main entrances
Standardizing visitor check-in procedures

Our schools are important community spaces — and they can remain so. However, student safety must always come first. Controlled-entry systems are now common practice across many Canadian school districts and are a reasonable, proactive step to prevent unauthorized access and improve accountability.

Locked exterior doors during instructional hours do not prevent emergency exits, nor do they prevent scheduled visitors, families, or community use. They simply ensure that entry occurs through monitored access points during the school day.

This is not about creating fear. It is about taking practical steps to protect students and staff while maintaining welcoming, community-centered schools.

We urge the school districts and the government in BC to prioritize these modern safety measures and commit to a clear implementation plan.

Our children deserve both open hearts and secure doors.
