Safer Nights for Riders: Allow Solid, Concealed Motorcycle Underglow in BC Now

The Issue

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, especially at night. Additional accent lighting, when solid, non-flashing, and concealed, makes motorcycles more noticeable to other drivers and will reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities while riding at night.

We are not asking to allow flashing, strobing, or pulsing lights of any kind. We ask only that BC update its laws to allow solid underglow lighting in any color, including red and blue, provided the light source (bulbs/LEDs) is not directly visible to the eye and only the glow effect can be seen.

We respectfully petition the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia to:

  1. Review Section 4.25 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations with the goal of modernizing it to allow motorcycles to use solid underglow lighting in any color on public roads.
  2. Prohibit flashing, strobing, or pulsing effects of any kind.
  3. Require that all underglow lighting be concealed so that no bulbs or LEDs are directly visible, creating only a diffused glow effect.
  4. Reclassify underglow lighting for motorcycles as a visibility and safety enhancement, not merely an “off-road lamp.”
  5. Engage with ICBC, CVSE, and motorcycle advocacy groups to explore how increased visibility through underglow can reduce night-time motorcycle collisions and fatalities.

Please sign and share this petition so we can show the BC government that motorcyclists deserve the right to be seen and be safe.
