Safer cycling on Collins Street

Safer cycling on Collins Street
The issue
Please sign the petition to let Hobart City Councillors know that an All Ages and Abilities cycle route on Collins Street is needed to get more people out of cars and onto bikes, scooters and other more sustainable transport options.
We (the undersigned) commend the City of Hobart for starting design work on an active transport link from the popular Hobart Rivulet path to Murray Street to be delivered as a “tactical trial”.
Collins Street is one of the most popular cycling routes into the city centre for people coming from Fern Tree, South Hobart and West Hobart. It's also used by people riding and scooting from other areas who appreciate its lower traffic volumes and signalised crossing over Molle Street.
While Collins Street is the best of a bad bunch of city streets, it still needs extensive work to make it safer for people of all ages and abilities to ride on. The risk of car dooring, being hit by a car and poor sightlines at intersections means many people who would like to ride don’t because they think it’s too unsafe.
Collins Street has the potential to become a truly vibrant active transport street which supports further development as envisaged in the Council’s 2023 Central Hobart Plan. It is also central to the All Ages and Abilities (AAA) network the Council committed to with the Tasmanian Government and other greater Hobart councils as part of the Greater Hobart Cycling Plan.
We ask Hobart City Councillors to honour the council’s commitment in the Greater Hobart Cycling Plan for a AAA cycleway on Collins Street, and expect the tactical trial options to include separated cycleways.
We commit to working with Council on the tactical trials and ask all Hobart City Councillors to support this important next step to make the city a more welcoming place and achieve its Community Vision.
