SAFELY cross Escarpment Blvd

The Issue

As residents of Southwest Austin, we face a daily challenge that puts our safety at risk. The lack of crosswalks on one mile of Escarpment Blvd between Davis Lane and Convict Hill Rd has made it perilous for adults and children to cross this wide road. With four lanes, over 15,000 cars a day, a divided median, and two bike lanes, the road is daunting to cross. This issue goes beyond individual safety; it affects our community's cohesion as this road divides our single neighborhood served by the same schools.

The introduction of a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) crosswalk would significantly improve pedestrian safety in our area. According to the Federal Highway Administration, PHBs have been shown to reduce pedestrian crashes by 69% and total crashes by 29%. This simple addition could make all the difference in ensuring safe passage for all members of our community.

We are not asking for much - just the basic right to safely navigate through our own neighborhood without fear. We urge city officials in Austin, TX to consider implementing a PHB crosswalk on Escarpment Blvd between Davis Lane and Convict Hill Rd as soon as possible.  The City of Austin has determined Escarpment pedestrian safety to be lower relative to other areas, however they just installed one on William Cannon which does not appear to ever be used.  By signing this petition, you are adding your voice to this need which will hopefully compel the city to revisit the need.

Please sign this petition if you believe in creating safer streets for everyone in Southwest Austin.
