Safeguard Your Vote: Insist on photo ID

Safeguard Your Vote: Insist on photo ID
The issue
MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT
We are calling on the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) and the Federal Government to introduce mandatory photo identification at all polling places across Australia. It’s time to protect the integrity of every vote, just as we protect everyday transactions with ID.
If we need ID to buy a drink, drive a car, or pick up a parcel — surely we should need it to vote.
Why This Matters
Australia prides itself on having a fair and trusted electoral system. But no system is immune from risk. In recent years, we’ve seen:
Cases of multiple voting
Stolen ballots
Over 1,800 ballot papers found in the home of an AEC contractor
Voter impersonation opportunities due to lack of verification
These incidents may be rare, but the damage to public trust is real. Mandatory photo ID is a simple, non-intrusive way to restore faith in the vote and prevent even the perception of fraud.
We’re not asking for anything extreme. We propose:
✅ That all voters show a valid photo ID when voting
✅ That free voter ID cards be issued to anyone without a driver’s licence or passport
✅ That this rule apply across early voting, election day, mobile, and postal voting
✅ That the change be implemented with full public education and bipartisan support
This is about protecting democracy — not suppressing it.
Mandatory ID laws already work in many developed democracies including Canada, Sweden, and parts of the United States. It is time for Australia to match the same standard of electoral security and transparency.
