Safeguard the Okefenokee Swamp from Mining Activities

Safeguard the Okefenokee Swamp from Mining Activities
The Issue
My husband and I are in the process of building our dream home beside a beautiful salt marsh in St Mary's, Georgia. Our tranquil tidal creek, a branch of the St Mary's River, could be severely impacted by mining activities next to the Okefenokee Swamp. The St Mary's River draws its life-giving headwaters from this swamp, and any disruption to its ecosystem could have far-reaching effects.
The proposed mining on Trail Ridge, an ancient coastline that serves as a protective barrier for the swamp, is particularly concerning. This activity has potential to lower water levels drastically and introduce harmful pollutants into our waterways. Moreover, it may lead to drought-induced fires that can devastate local flora and fauna.
The Okefenokee Swamp is not just an ecological treasure; it is also part of our community’s identity and livelihoods. It supports diverse wildlife species including over 200 types of birds and 50 species of mammals (source: U.S Fish & Wildlife Service). Additionally, it contributes significantly to Georgia’s economy through tourism.
We urge Georgia regulators to prioritize environmental sustainability over short-term economic gains by denying approval of mining activities near the Okefenokee Swamp. Let us protect this natural wonder for future generations who deserve clean waterways and a thriving ecosystem just as we do today.
Please sign this petition if you believe in safeguarding our environment against destructive practices like mining near sensitive ecosystems such as the Okefenokee Swamp and the St Mary's river. *Georgia EPD is taking comments until April 9, 2024*
