We expect that Int 1123 - the bill that seeks to charge specific buidlings $55 per unit per year for trash containerization - may start to move within the next few weeks as the City and State budgeting process wraps up.

To date the following City Council Members have signed on to Int 1123 as co-sponsors.

Crystal Hudson, Shaun Abreu, Keith Powers , Julie Menin, Lincoln Restler, Farah N. Louis, Julie Won, Mercedes Narcisse, Erik D. Bottcher, Vickie Paladino

With primaries approaching, it is the perfect time to reach out to your council member and let them know that while you appreciate the need for containerization -

1) DSNY should conduct a survey following its implementation of organics collection and meet with co-op/condo stakeholders before proceeding with procurement and plans - with organics trash anticipated to represent 1/2 of non-recyclable trash it must be taken into consideration, and

2) Trash containerization and pick-up should be part of city services, as vermin mitigation improves the quality of life for all. The cost should be borne equally by all taxpayers and come from the general fund, not as another fee levied only against those in larger multi-family residences, while single-family and two-family homeowners are exempted.

3) Many of your shareholders/unit owners are already concerned about the increase in costs due to other compliance measures, and cannot sustain additional targeted increases.

If your city council member is not on the bill, but you wish to contact them, you can find them HERE.

Beyond the charge for trash containerization, there are other bills city council is considering that will have a negative impact on (1) the governance of co-ops and condos, (2) our standing as homeowners, and (3) our finances.

We are launching a "Co-op and Condo Legislative Scorecard" for City Council Members on April 30, which will clearly indicate how the sponsorships and votes of each city council members impacts co-ops and condos in their district.

I'm also running Town Halls all spring to build on the advocacy work happening in co-ops and condos across the city.

As more co-op and condo homeowners communicate their needs with their city council members, council members are listening and asking questions. This is the only way we will stop the trend of endless and costly legislation.

We hope you will continue to join us in our efforts to safeguard the affordability and viability of our homes.

If you would like to attend our upcoming Town Hall, please register on Eventbrite - it is open and free to all co-op and condo board members and homeowners:
