Safeguard Parents' Right to Advocate for Comprehensive Education in DODEA Schools

Safeguard Parents' Right to Advocate for Comprehensive Education in DODEA Schools
The Issue
As military parents and spouses, we trust Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) schools to give our children a first-class education. Our children, embodying some of the most diverse cultural backgrounds in the United States, benefit from the strength, resilience, and breadth of experiences within their families and wider communities. The cornerstone of our values is the firm belief that cultural diversity and comprehensive education contribute to a robust, inclusive society. In fact, DODEA student performance has been ranked ahead of most of their peers nationwide.
However, recent actions threaten this educational balance by removing specific books, clubs, activities, events, and elements of the curriculum from DODEA schools without adequate disclosure to parents, undermining the academic and social development of our students.
As of February 6, by mandate, DODEA schools at every military base in the U.S. and overseas removed a still undisclosed number of books from libraries, canceled Black History projects and art, ceased all heritage activities, disbanded student clubs, and has concealed what specific changes are being made to curriculum.
We see a need for changes. DODEA must adopt a policy of full transparency regarding any changes in educational content. As part of the military community, we understand the power of dialogue and call on DODEA to give parents the right to object to changes perceived as harmful to the reception of a well-rounded education.
By fostering a more open exchange of ideas and giving parents a voice in their children's education, we can ensure that DODEA schools continue to nurture the diversity and resilience that are hallmarks of our community. We cannot lose sight of the proven value of cultural diversity and a comprehensive education.
Keep education broad, diverse, and transparent in DODEA schools. Sign the petition now.
