Safe, Strong, Prepared, Confident: Bring Self-Defense Education to Our Schools

Safe, Strong, Prepared, Confident: Bring Self-Defense Education to Our Schools
The Issue
The Issue
Too many students today face bullying, peer pressure, and unsafe situations both inside and outside of school. And while schools often talk about safety, very few actually teach students how to physically and mentally protect themselves.
That’s why I believe every student should have access to a basic self-defense and safety class, not to learn how to fight, but to learn how to recognize danger, set boundaries, and stay safe.
Why It Matters
Self-defense education teaches students more than just how to react, but it also teaches them how to be aware, calm, and confident. It helps prevent bullying, supports mental health, and gives students practical tools that they can use in real life situations.
Students often end up in fights not because they want to, but because they don’t know how to protect themselves or respond to bullying. Without the right tools, small conflicts can turn serious. A self-defense class can teach students how to stay safe and avoid violence intelligently and calmly.
We prepare for fire drills and lockdowns, so why not prepare for personal safety too?
A self-defense program would:
- Promote anti-bullying and personal safety
- Build confidence and self-awareness
- Teach de-escalation, boundaries, and nonviolent protection
- Encourage respect for yourself and others
Why I’m Starting This
I recently joined the 2025 Global Youth Program, and it has already pushed me to speak up and take action on things that matter. I believe that this one small change could make a difference in students’ lives.
I want students in my school and across our district to feel safer, stronger, and more confident. Let’s start by giving them the tools they need.
Call to Action
I’m calling on our local school board and district leaders to introduce a self-defense and safety course for middle and high school students. Whether it’s a short workshop or a regular part of P.E., it could make a huge difference.
Please sign and support this petition if you believe every student deserves the confidence and knowledge to protect themselves and stand up against bullying.
