Safe pedestrian crossing for Elizabeth Street (between Bell street and Murray road)

The Issue

There's a clear need for a safe pedestrian crossing between Bell Street Preston and Murray Road Coburg North/ West Preston.

Elizabeth Street is a barrier when accessing the Merri Creek path or Nicholson Street trams by foot or bike from West Preston.

Significant numbers of school children cross at this dangerous point on their way to and from Coburg High School. (Approximately 230 Coburg High School students live on the Preston side of Elizabeth street).

The area is a community hub with vulnerable road users crossing at this point to also access the 527 and 526 buses, Senior Citizen's Centre, Barry Becket child care and Newlands Neighbourhood House.

The only safe crossing is 500 metres away (in the wrong direction) at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Murray Road.

Elizabeth Street is a busy and dangerous road with approximately 1076 vehicles in the morning peak, and a 'blind rise' hill just near Booth st making visibility when crossing a challenge.

Merri-bek and Darebin Councils have advised that they would support the installation of a pedestrian signal crossing.

Darebin City Council have noted the communities preferred location for a safe pedestrian crossing on Elizabeth St near Raymond St and Goff St in their updated Streets for People Preston Activity Link project.

A pedestrian crossing between Booth and Raymond Streets would also support safe passage for the Strategic Cycling Corridor.

Both Councils are working with the Department of Transport and Planning to secure state government funding for pedestrian lights.
