Safe and connected
The Issue
In the unlikely but possible event of a school shooting or any situation that might place me and other students in harm's way, I believe it is crucial to have immediate access to communication tools. Our phones are not just gadgets; they are lifelines to our family and friends. I want to be able to contact my parents and assure them of my safety, or alert authorities as swiftly as possible.
A state bill currently prohibits the use of telecommunication devices on school property and during school hours. While the intent is to minimize distractions and encourage focus on education, it inadvertently puts students at a disadvantage during emergencies.
Research indicates that communication during critical moments can save lives. According to the National Safety Council, quick access to communication during emergencies is vital, and even a few seconds can make a significant difference. Given that school shootings are an unfortunate reality, it's imperative that students retain the ability to communicate during such events.
The solution is not a total ban. Instead, the bill should be amended to allow controlled, monitored access to phones during genuine emergencies. Schools can establish clear guidelines and educate students on responsible usage. A flexible approach can ensure that educational objectives are met while simultaneously safeguarding the well-being of students.
Let’s urge our lawmakers to revisit this policy and craft a law that protects students without compromising their safety. Sign this petition to bring much-needed change for a balanced and safe school environment.
