Say NO! to the excessive overdevelopment of Pentavia Retail Park and to the Mayor!
The Issue
The proposed redevelopment of Pentavia Retail Park, Mill Hill into 844 Flats, totally disproportionate to the area and decimating local infrastructure and resources.
See the latest plans here: https://www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/planning/planning-applications-and-decisions/public-hearings/pentavia-retail-park-public-hearing

Barnet Council have resoundingly rejected the proposal for a variety of very sound reasons, including but not limited to; air quality, water supply, access, pressure on infrastructure and not fitting the character of the area and reading the updated plans, the Developers have now proposed even more homes be built and that a staggering 41% be affordable - this only serves to highlight the blatant disregard they have for Mill Hill residents. From reading meeting minutes, it is clear that, whilst the decision was with Barnet Council still that the Mill Hill Residents Association, The Barnet Cycling Campaign, The Mill Hill Preservation Society, Matthew Offord MP, Andrew Dismore AM, the three Mill Hill Conservative Councillors, The three Mill Hill Lib Dem candidates, the three Mill Hill Labour candidates and even the coordinator of the Mill Hill Churches homeless shelter scheme were all solidly united in their opposition to it - a most unusual consensus across party lines and colours and across such a wide range of perspectives and viewpoints only serves to prove Barnet’s decision to refuse permission was correct, no assurances are being made by the developers to resolve these issues in any way.
We already have the massively over-developed site at the former Inglis Barracks opposite Mill Hill East Underground station and now have the prospect of hundreds more flats at the site of the former medical research institute - enough is enough!
Last year, the Mayor decided to personally take over the planning decision after Barnet Council already (wisely) soundly rejected the proposals. It is a matter of public knowledge that the Mayor personally intervened with regards to the Charlton Riverside development in Greenwich and took the decision away from the local councillors who had rightly opposed it by a significant majority. What is the point of granting local authorities these powers if the decision making process is taken away from them and centralised? How does a central planning authority with no links to the area know better than people born and raised there? What is it that the Mayor believes his office can add that Barnet Council have not been able to? This is just as relevant to Pentavia. See details regarding the Mayor's decision to intervene here: http://millhillforum.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/MoL3756a-Decision-Letter-and-Report.pdf?fbclid=IwAR3ccNrzMtr7MnvkP46r2xYS_vLuEqxl4zypOZczg-5GWxsV0wK7RqX9f7Y
Local MP Matthew Offord has been proactive and campaigned against these outrageous plans from the start, however we should urge him and all of our elected representatives to do more! (See his objection here: https://www.matthewofford.co.uk/campaigns/no-planning-permission-pentavia-retail-park-mill-hill?fbclid=IwAR2aTSSijr6TjPh1vSMNkrageCAILJDBsWlQJ8U2cx6g6nUJMQactFvFFRU
We need to fight this every step of the way and ensure that planning permission is rightfully refused and that the Mayor respects the rights of local citizens!
Please write to your members of parliament, your councillors, your neighbourhood watches, involve your families, friends and local businesses - together we can resist this.
I am a recent (Autumn 2017) first time buyer in the area and chose to put down roots in Mill Hill after falling for its charming suburban village qualities and character. After reading about the development on Barnet Council's website, I was galvanised into taking action. We cannot allow our lovely home to be at the mercy of these developers and the Mayor with his blatant disregard for local people!
