New secondary school urgently needed for SE1. A planning application to deliver a new secondary school, sixth form college and community facilities on the site of the Old Southwark Fire Station was submitted to Southwark Council in February 2017 (AP/17/0367). To ensure that the school can open for pupils in September 2019 Southwark Council must grant a planning consent for the application in January 2018. There is a critical need for additional school places in Southwark and the new school will make a huge contribution to our local community.

“Dear Petitioner, Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website, and hand delivered to City Hall, about the planning application at the former Southwark Fire Station. A planning application is currently being considered at this site, and in order not to fetter the Mayor’s decision-making process it is not appropriate to comment further on the application proposals at this stage. The Greater London Authority’s (GLA) Stage 1 consultation report made it clear that the provision of a school at this site is strongly supported. However, in line with London Plan policy and Southwark Council’s policies, it is also important that this site makes the maximum reasonable contribution to affordable housing. GLA officers are currently working with Southwark Council, the applicant and the fire brigade, in order to resolve the outstanding issues. Please be assured that GLA officers are committed to ensuring a timely resolution to this matter. Your comments will be reported to the Mayor as part of his decision making on this application.
