We, a group of SVUSD students and alumni, have come together to draft this Open Letter to the SVUSD Board of Education with a list of demands to not only erase racism from SVUSD campuses, but create a curriculum and environment that pushes for anti-racism. Our demands include:
- Require an ethnic studies course for graduation.
- Hold teachers, students, staff, and administration accountable for racism.
- Conduct a study to determine if police presence on SVUSD campuses is still beneficial or necessary. In the mean time, reallocate resources and funding from police presence on campus towards mental health services and restorative justice leaders on campuses.
- Revise the racist dress code policies.
- Establish an advisory committee to gather student input.
You can read our Open Letter here for further description and explanation of our demands above.
We also created an anonymous Google Form for SVUSD students, alumni, staff, teachers and administration to share their experiences of racism and intolerance on SVUSD campuses. Testimonies are included at the end of our open letter. If you would like to share your testimony or suggestions, which will be anonymously added to our open letter unless you specify otherwise, you can do so here.
