Keep the Arts Funded! Restore Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission funding via City and County Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT)

On behalf of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC), thank you for your support of the arts in this difficult economy. SMAC is currently launching an effort to encourage City and County of Sacramento officials to restore SMAC’s funding in the upcoming 2014-15 budget year – back to its 2008 funding levels of 0.5% of the Transient Occupancy Tax. We hope to enlist support from you and your supporters in this effort.
SMAC is a City/County joint agency that, since 2010, has seen its budget reduced by approximately 80%, with major programs dramatically cut or eliminated. We risk losing additional programs, staff, and cultural organizations without restored funding.
Investment in SMAC is an investment in economic growth, jobs and investment in the cultural capital of the region. SMAC raised and re-granted funds to individual artists and arts organizations, reaching more than 100,000 students in the last three years. For instance, SMAC leveraged $285,000 into $47 million through the Cultural Arts Awards Program. SMAC Commissioners recently highlighted the value of the public arts program in Sacramento and its contribution to the regional economy. http://www.sacbee.com/2014/02/27/6192444/another-view-public-art-deserves.html
But we cannot continue to do the work we do, and support the Sacramento arts community without increased TOT funding. These funding cuts have affected all programs and staff, but particularly, our Microgrants program and public art collection are threatened without restored funding. Because of significantly reduced staffing, we will neither be able to continue to maintain our public art collection nor adequately support other key programs. Without the support of SMAC, arts organizations and the arts community is at risk.
Please sign this petition, and forward it to your fellow colleagues, friends, and arts supporters. We hope to enlist you to speak on behalf of your organization, or as a community member, to support restoring SMAC’s budget, and to serve as champions for increased arts funding in Sacramento. We know that with your support, we can convey the importance of the arts to our elected leaders and the value of the arts to the region’s economy.
Thank you for all that you do to make Sacramento a vibrant community!
