Sachem is a fantastic community where neighbors take care of each other! We keep ourselves and our children safe, and expect the same from our school district. We, the residents of Sachem, are asking that the district’s transportation department eliminate the “Walker” designation, and instead provide “Universal Busing”, whereby every student in the district is entitled to a bus to and from school, regardless of distance. We believe this to be a safety issue as children cannot possibly be expected to walk unaccompanied through our neighborhoods’ busy streets and roads without sidewalks. In our community’s current climate—where the state requires lock-down drills in our classrooms to ensure our children’s safety—we, the community, demand our children are equally protected in their travels to and from school.
