This morning, a parcel was delivered to the office of the new Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government, the Hon. Stephen Knoll MP. He is also the Minister for Planning, Member of the Executive Council and MP for Schubert.
The parcel contained a printout of this petition, both from this Change.org online petition and the paper petition which was circulated in the community. The current combined tally of respondents to date is 1984. Also enclosed were 38 pages of comments and discussion from fellow signatories. (Not everybody made their comments 'public'.)
THANK YOU for supporting this petition so far and special thanks for all of the insightful and thoughtful comments. The comments are so important for our decision-makers to understand public expectations, values and community needs.
So often, decisions are made based on statistics but statistics do not show the entire picture. Thorough social research, which might include personal interactions and observations of real-life situations, plus timely community consultation in the first instance, put the statistics into context:
For example, e.g. statistics show that 10 people catch a weekday train every day. The simplistic view is that a change to the train service will affect only 10 people. However, if one visits the station every day, one might discover that every day brings a different set of 10 people; thus a change to the service will affect up to 50 different people. There might be other people who would use the train if there were some other change to the service. You won't find them at the station. You need to do further social research in the wider community; not to mention associates of the current travellers who may also be affected by any changes to the service.
I HAVE REQUESTED A MEETING with Minister Knoll to help him and his department understand that the current Flinders Link Project design has ramifications beyond engineering and a single governmental portfolio of Transport; e.g. health, disability, ageing, environment, urban planning, local government, treasury, sustainability, productivity, social inclusion etc.
FLINDERS LINK has the potential to be a jewel-in-the-crown piece of infrastructure as an example of disability- (or 'all-ability-') and 'all-ages-friendly', integrated, social and financial success without leaving anyone behind.
Please keep your comments, thoughts and stories coming. I am sorry I have been unable to respond to all of them personally, but I read them all. Your valuable comments will all be forwarded to the Minister for Transport.
P.S. The parcel's cover letter was emailed to the Minister on 16th of April 2018 so I hope he will be on the lookout for it today!
