To Portland City Council and School Board members,
We strongly oppose the closing of our island schools on Peaks and Cliff Islands. These schools are ESSENTIAL to the sustainability and vitality of our island neighborhoods. Closing Peaks Island School would force young families with children to move away and deter other young families from moving to our community. Our local businesses will suffer, our housing values will suffer, the small-town feel that we love about our island community will suffer. Schools are cultural assets that drive neighborhood economies.
Don't threaten the safety of our children. Closing of the Peaks Island Elementary School would require transporting 4- to 10-year old children across Casco Bay twice each school day, raising risk and expense.
Support a strong education of ALL the City’s children. Portland is booming. Rateables/City revenues are increasing. The draconian cuts proposed jeopardize the education available to all Portland’s kids. Why must our schools bear this burden? There is no investment more worthwhile.
Our children are our city’s future. We value educating our kids. We ask you to make robust school funding a priority. Please keep all our schools open.
