Bill S.1013 - Smarter Sentencing Act of 2021 was introduced to the Senate on March 25, 2021. It currently sits in the Committee on the Judiciary for further review. The purpose of this bill is to reduce statutory mandatory minimum penalties related to certain drug offenses and offenders charged with Level 6 Felonies. The timeliness of this bill becomes evident when considering the cost to house an inmate is $54 p/day and Indiana spent over $315 million in 2021. Indiana taxpayers deserve a solution to this problem.

Supporting bill S.1013 will serve as a stepping-stone in creating a more reformative, rather than punitive, prison system here in Indiana. No one benefits from continued recidivism among our state's minor offenders. I hope I can count on your voice supporting this important legislation.
