An appeal for the safety of LGBTIs in Kakuma camp of refugees, Kenya.
Kakuma camp is located in the North-western region of Kenya, with a population of 185,449 registered refugees and asylum-seekers.
With new influx, Kakuma surpassed its capacity by over 58,000 individuals, leading to congestion in various sections.
LGBTIs are with women, sex-workers and kids, amongst the most vulnerable people in the camp.
The World Food Program announced a cutback of food of 30% on October 2017. Transgenders are not given a chance of employment due to discriminations. The HIV-positive people have strong treatments, they need that food to survive and already show signs of malnutrition.
Almost if not all transgenders have been beaten or harassed. They fear for their safety in the camp. The shelters are located in areas of the camp that are prode to flooding. And many of the shelters take in water on regular basis.
To get the LGBTI refugee status is a really long process. The situation is dire for many, with persecutions, lack of food or medical care.
We call on the United Nations and the international community to help LGBTIs for their safety, and survival.
