Hello supporters of Friends of Melnea Cass Boulevard,
We wanted to share with you some BIG NEWS! Yesterday the City of Boston announced its plans to halt the road reconstruction of Melnea Cass Boulevard and redesign the project.
We thank you for standing with us, the Friends of Melnea Cass Boulevard (FMCB). Your support has been so important! As you know, for the past decade, we have been protesting against the proposed design that would have removed and damaged hundreds of trees. Together we stood tall. This was truly a community effort! We hope you can continue supporting our work through a donation here.
We would love it if you could share the news with your network. We also invite you to join us on Monday to celebrate "People Before Highways Day." Please see below for additional information.
Finally, we know that the decision to stop this project did not come lightly. We hope you can take a moment to thank Boston's leadership, including Mayor Walsh, Chris Cook (Chief of Environment), Dr. Karilyn Crockett (Chief of Equity), Chris Osgood (Chief of Streets), and members of Boston City Council for working with us to find a better way forward.
Join FMCB, 1/25: People Before Highways Day
Monday, January 25th, is the 52nd anniversary of People Before Highways Day. Join Friends of Melnea Cass Boulevard in commemorating the homes lost and people displaced by the Inner Belt Highway Project in Roxbury and Jamaica Plain. In the 1960s, over 1,000 homes were claimed and destroyed to make way for a proposed highway, part of which is now MCB.
The highway construction was stopped by community activists whose actions led then Governor Sargent to declare January 25th, 1969, as People Before Highways Day. This year lighted paper lanterns will be placed along Melnea Cass Boulevard, near 90 Windsor St, from 5pm to 9pm to recognize the lives affected.
COVID protocol will be followed: wear a mask and observe social distancing if you plan to attend. We hope you can join.
