The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ practice of having bishops interview minors one-on-one, including questions regarding their sexual activity, is deeply harmful to LDS youth and should be immediately ceased. Beginning at age 12, LDS children are interviewed twice each year by a member of the bishopric regarding their adherence to the commandments and other church guidelines. These interviews typically take place one-on-one in the bishop’s office and include questioning regarding the child’s sexual behavior. Bishops and youth leaders are not required to submit to background checks prior to working with children.

Although children are permitted to ask their parents to accompany them to these interviews, it is unreasonable to expect children to take this initiative themselves. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints promotes its leaders as beloved authority figures, and children who have grown up hearing this message may not feel comfortable taking the time to get their parents when their leaders approach them for their interview.

These interviews pose significant harm to LDS children. According to personal stories gathered by the Protect LDS Children organization, consequences of these invasive interviews include shame, impaired sexual relations in adulthood, and suicidal thoughts. Recently, many cases of sexual abuse by LDS bishops have also come to light, further illustrating the dangers of allowing older men to interview children (especially regarding sexual matters) alone behind closed doors.

A recent survey sent via email to church members asked whether youth interviews should extend to children as young as eight years old. This suggests that, if the practice is not stopped altogether, more children may soon be put at risk. Please protect the youth of the church by issuing an immediate ban on sexual, one-on-one bishopric interviews.
