That is excellent news, as it means that he may discuss how to make progress from the MOD position that changes to a pension scheme cannot be made retrospective.

For example, there could be ex gratia payments to cover Gurkha veterans' years of service before 1997, which were on lower pension rates than British soldiers, and then equal pensions paid from now on, depending on years of service.

Where there is the political will within Government, settlement of Gurkha veterans' grievances would enable them to retire with respect and dignity, knowing that the British Government really has valued their service.

Meanwhile, preparations are well underway for the Inauguration Ceremony of the unveiling of the Statue of Rifleman Kulbir Thapa VC, the First Gurkha Victoria Cross (VC) recipient in Princes Gardens, Aldershot, on Saturday, 25 September.

It would be a welcome mark of British Government respect for Gurkhas if Aldershot MP and People and Veterans Minister Leo Docherty MP could announce settlement of Gurkha veterans' grievances before that ceremony in his constituency.
