The Riverside Unified School District has been turning a blind eye to cases regarding sexual assault.

There have been numerous reports of sexual assault that never leads to investigations or investigations that never led to consequences for the assailant. Middle and high school students are being harassed and assaulted and receiving no help from school administrations.

We are students of RUSD. These are our stories, these are our friends who are being harmed. Riverside is not the safe haven our families imagined when they sent us to school here.

Time is up and we need everyone's help in making sure that this district can be a safer place for students. We want policy changes that make our school environments a more comfortable place for everyone, but especially for the young women who are disproportionately affected by this issue.

Riverside schools need to adopt a zero-tolerance policy regarding sexual assault. Any allegations from students need to be thoroughly investigated, and if it is concluded that an assault took place there must be an expulsion. It is unfair for the victims of abuse to have to walk around on the same campus as their abusers. RUSD spends more time enforcing sexist dress codes than consequences for sexual assault – and we’ve had enough.

RUSD is developing a reputation for failing to address repeated sexual violence on its campuses. It is the duty of school administrators to make sure that their campuses are safe places for all students. Students are tired of their voices not being heard, it's time that RUSD implements real policies to hold abusers accountable and prevent more harm to its students. Enough is enough.
