Keep The 2021 Rugby League World Cup in Workington

The Issue

Following the tragic news that the proposed Allerdale Stadium is unlikely to become a reality, there has been rumours that Workington will end up losing the right to host three Rugby League World Cup fixtures in the 2021 Tournament.

As a proud Citizen of Workington and champion of all that is good in the town that I was born, bred and still live in, I appeal to the organisation committee to reconsider this move.

When the Rugby League World Cup last came to England in 2013, Workington was lucky enough to host Scotland's two Group C fixtures at Derwent Park - against Tonga on 29 October and Italy on 3 November.

Both were thrilling encounters which ended in a 26 - 24 Scotland win and 30 - 30 draw respectively.with a combined attendance of 14'910.  I was there for both games and the atmosphere before, during and after them was fantastic as it generated a boost for the town.

But above all, both fixtures brought the town to the attention of the global audience - from Winnipeg to Wollongong, they were getting to see, hear and learn about the proud, historic and friendly town that is Workington.

If Derwent Park was good enough to host two fixtures in 2013, then they are more than capable - and then some, and more - of hosting three fixtures in 2021.

Workington has crafted a long, proven track record in Rugby League and even through tough periods the support, the dedication and the enthusiasm has never diminished.  However, if these games were to be taken away, the implications for the sport - indeed the town itself - would not only be profound but also detrimental.

On behalf of everybody in Workington,- and for the sake of future generations - I urge you to keep these games in the town.

Just as in 2013, so Workington will once again deliver the goods and do the competition proud in 2021.

Please and Thank you very much.
