Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) have been an iconic New Zealand brand for many years, being the sole major skifield operator in the North Island, operating both the Turoa and Whakapapa skifields.
Recently, RAL have decided to charge existing Season Pass Holders (who paid between $400 - $700 for a pass) an additional charge for skiing during the period known as 'Snowvember' (a common extension to the regular ski season, that usually ends in late October). This period has been around in the past and has been included in the cost of a Season Pass. RAL made the decision last season that this was no longer viable and that they would have to charge for this period, but kept it a secret until everyone had already purchased their passes and it was nearing the end of the season. This means that Season Pass holders now have to pay up to $260 on top of their original pass, just to continue riding for the rest of the season.
Everyone understands that costs increase and that RAL may have to charge for additional periods, outside of their regular seasonal operational. However, the customers have the right to be told that this will be the case before they purchase their Season Pass - not after. It's only fair that customers know exactly what they are paying for at the time of purchase, and that should 'Snowvember' occur - there will be an additional charge.
RAL has offered no reimbursement or other remedy for people who have already purchased 2014 Season Passes and are now being charged extra to ride the Mountain, all because they decided to keep us in the dark about their plans to charge for this period. That's just plain wrong and borderline illegal, as it's highly misleading to consumers given their track-record of not having charged for this extra period in the past.
Sign the petition if you are disgruntled at RAL for their poor Public Relations in this respect over the 2014 season and would like to see an improvement for 2015 and beyond, with RAL being clear and upfront about exactly what a Season Pass will cover.
