Create an Animal Abuse Register for animal offenders

The Issue

In the UK there is currently no real system in place to prevent animal abusers from obtaining more pets and committing further acts of cruelty towards animals. While, for example, the UK's sex offenders are stored on a public Sex Offenders register, there is no database of animal abusers that can be accessed by employers, pet breeders and sellers, schools, parents or guardians, and so on.

Pet breeders and sellers should be required by law to check a potential buyer against the register before allowing an animal into their care, and failure to do so should result in a tough penalty. Entering animal offenders onto an Animal Abuse Register is the only foolproof way to prevent animals from entering into the wrong hands and protect them from needless cruelty.

Not only is the register crucial to the protection of animals, but it gives the people of the United Kingdom the right to know exactly who they are employing, selling or giving an animal to, or entrusting with, for example, a young or vulnerable person.

Many studies provide evidence of a link between animal cruelty and violence against humans, therefore much like with the Sex Offenders Register, access to an Animal Abuse Register is something the UK public deserves to ensure the safety of both animals and people.
