The Issue

In 2015, Attacker Natasha Welsh of Chester, England, UK walked free from court after hitting Jemma Fitzgerald in the head with an ice skate.

Jemma Fitzgerald was attacked with an ice skate in Deeside
A Chester woman was hit in the head with an ice skate in an unprovoked attack because she was smoking.

Jemma Fitzgerald suffered a fractured skull and had brain surgery after she was targeted by Natasha Welsh.

The court acquitted Welsh for no reason other than the fact that she has Asperger's syndrome, a high functioning form of autism. While it is true that Asperger's syndrome can cause social impairments, it is under no circumstances an excuse for violence. Simply acquitting someone of their responsibilities because they have the condition is not fair to the victim or the autistic community at large because it only serves to reinforce the stigma among society that all autistic people are preconditioned to behave in this way.

This is why Natasha Welsh should face a jury again and face the consequences of what she did without using her asperger's as a get out clause.
